Ride Behind Someone

When I was driving to Nashville this weekend, I often had a car or truck in front of me. While following them, I was reminded of a practice in cycling called “drafting” or “slipstreaming.” Riding directly behind another cycler can lead to energy savings of up to 30% because they cut through the air for you, reducing your own air resistance. I am grateful to all those who have gone before me doing many of the things that I’ve wanted to do because learning from their experience has saved me tons of energy.

A small example from today is that I’ve had trouble figuring out how to start my new lawn mower that the previous owner of our home generously left behind. My wife encouraged me to find someone on Youtube who’s done this before and sure enough, that led me to learn about the choke switch and how to use it.

A bigger example is from my journey studying Latin. I am blessed to have learned from many better Latinists than myself. They taught me effective strategies for learning and shared an endless collection of excellent resources. It would have taken me much longer to discover these things on my own.

Tony Robbins says, “If you want to be successful, find someone who has achieved the results you want and copy what they do and you’ll achieve the same results.”

This week I invite you to ask:

What is something I am trying to achieve right now? Who is someone who has achieved this before? How can I “ride behind” this person to progress more easily?

What beliefs might this person have that enables their success? What actions does this person take? What habits does this person have? Which of these will I incorporate into my life next?

God bless,
Dan
