Filter Your Interpretations
In the following pairs of statements which is true?
People stay the same. — People change.
I don’t belong here. — Other people also feel like they don’t belong.
I am unattractive. — If one person, my future spouse, finds me attractive, that is more than enough.
All of the above statements are examples of mindsets. Mindsets are beliefs that incarnate feelings and behaviors. None of them is simply true. I have believed all of the above at certain times in my life. Often, there is more than one way to interpret a situation, and sometimes, it is unclear which is more true. This brings us to the first filter:
Is it true? (tip of the hat to Byron Katie and her 4 Questions for this one)
When we look at two or more interpretations, and we find that there is evidence for each being partially true, then we can apply the second and third filters:
Which of these interpretations would it be more noble to focus on?
Which one would be more productive of good things for myself and for others?
This week, I invite you to pick a challenging situation in your life and ask:
What mindsets are at work here? What beliefs are shaping my feelings and actions?
Write these down and then ask of each:
Is it true? Is it an absolutely, 100%, “capital T” truth?
If your belief is true, then live according to that. If it is unclear which interpretation is true, then ask:
Which of these interpretations is more noble? Which is more fruitful?
Once you’ve identified a more noble or fruitful belief, practice making that one your new focus.
God bless,
Dan
