The Central Mystery
Why is there something rather than nothing? In a beautiful article about Being, Johan Kutz invites us to spend more time marveling at the fact of our existence. He puts it this way: “We often forget that we exist. Distracted by the furor of politics and discourse—which St. Gregory described as 'torrents as they fall into the measureless deep of the sea with a mighty noise’—we forget to contend with the central mystery of our being, the existence of existence.”
Whatever your belief and tradition, it seems to me a great good to contemplate existence.
This week, I invite you to slow down to ponder deeply the questions below. (Notice your first quick thoughts, let them pass, and sink into even deeper meditation.)
What is the experience of noticing that things exist like? What is it like to notice that I exist? What is it like to notice that others exist? Why is there something rather than nothing? Why do I exist?
God bless,
Dan
