If-Then Vision

According to this short talk on productivity, using “if-then” language to define your vision for change is much more effective than typical goal-setting. In the study the talk cites, students who were hoping to exercise over Christmas break were divided into two groups. One group was asked to set goals and the other group was given “if-then” statements to define their routines. For example, the people in the first group may have written things like, “I want to work out more.” The second group had statements like, “If it’s 7am on Monday, then you’re at the gym.” The first group failed 62% of the time but the second group only failed 9% of the time. The talk argues that our brains are wired better for “if-then” statements.

I’ve been trying this out lately with some success. Here’s my best example so far. “If I’m in bed, then I’m reading by candlelight.” I used to scroll on my phone but now it’s quite enjoyable and effortless to read instead.

This week I invite you to ask:

Where in my life am I currently using goal-setting language without getting results? How would I redefine this area with “if-then” statements?

God bless,
Dan
